This project is funded by the Australian Government Department of  Education, Employment and Workplace Relations through the Local Employment Coordinator Flexible Funding Pool initiative.

As published in the recent local newspaper, School leavers who are yet to find work are being offered a opportunity to develop the skills most valued by employers.  Bridging the Gap, with support from the Department for Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, is trialling a program that teaches motivation, time management, planning, dealing with pressure, initiative, communication and teamwork.  According to Bridging the Gap Chief Executive Colin Kerr, there are about 200 young people registered with Centrelink who graduated from Year 12 who have not gone on to any form of employment or futher training and similar numbers exist in the Peel Region.

“These young people mostly just lack a few soft skills and this becomes a major barrier, impacting the way they market themselves to prospective employers”, Mr Kerr said.  The Chamber of Commerce and Industry WA and South Metropolitan Youth Link partnership program is developing an “employability skills” regional partnership to improve the take-up of school leavers in the workforce.
