Violence against women is at an all-time high in Australia, with 1 in 4 women experiencing Family and Domestic Violence (FDV).
Sadly in our local community, violence against women is the highest in WA.
Since our GROW program (formerly known as PLAN project) began in 2020, we have been helping women experiencing FDV rebuild their lives after fleeing a violent home.

Tara’s Story
A young mum of four, Tara* had been living with violence and fear for many years. With her childhood also marred by violence, Tara said; “I just thought that was how life was meant to be”.
Without any family to turn to Tara had endured years of coercive control and violence, leaving her feeling completely alone and hopeless. Psychologically worn down by her abuser, Tara was severely struggling with her mental health and self-esteem.
It was by chance that Tara found our GROW program. While fleeing her abuser, she ran into our office to hide. We can only imagine what would have happened if she hadn’t.

Luckily Tara found our vital support that day – the support she didn’t think she deserved.
Our mentor, who has lived through FDV herself, emotionally supported and listened as Tara opened up about her experience. Together, they explored the abuse Tara had faced, especially the coercive control. Slowly Tara began to understand what had happened to her wasn’t her fault.
As they built her Personal Life Plan together, they identified the most urgent need – find a job so Tara could safely leave her abuser and support her family.
Tara’s mentor helped her:
Quickly Tara found a job she loved and planned her escape. We worked with emergency crisis organisations to help Tara move to a local women’s refuge.
For the first time Tara was earning her own income, and her children were safe; “ I came to realise (my life was) not a healthy environment…in the first 3 months of working with (my mentor), I built confidence…I felt confident to leave my relationship…I have so much pride…I never thought I would be where I am now….I’m thriving, my children are thriving.”
Without our GROW program, the future could have remained very bleak for Tara and her children.
Now Tara and her family are thriving. Tara is feeling confident, her mental health is strong, she is financially independent and her children are safe and happy.
Sadly for every mum like Tara we help, there are so many more out in the community suffering.
